Drip irrigation kit in Nigeria: what a complete kit should include

Most failed drip systems in Nigeria are not failed pumps. They are incomplete kits: the right tape with the wrong fittings, or no filter at all. If you know the parts list before you buy, you avoid the return trips and the blocked emitters.
What a complete drip irrigation kit contains
- Drip tape. Sold in 1500m and 2000m rolls, with emitter spacing chosen for your crop, commonly 20cm or 30cm.
- Joiners. To connect tape runs and repair breaks without cutting a full length out of service.
- End caps. To close the end of each run and hold pressure through the line.
- Filter. Non-negotiable. Borehole and river water carries sediment that blocks emitters permanently.
- Connectors and fittings. Tape-to-lateral connectors, valves and takeoffs sized to your mainline.
Choosing emitter spacing and flow rate
Closer emitter spacing suits shallow-rooted and closely planted crops such as leafy vegetables and onion. Wider spacing suits tomato, pepper and other crops planted further apart.
Flow rate decides how long you irrigate per set. Our common drip tape specification is 16mm diameter, 0.2mm thickness and 4 litres per hour per emitter, which covers most greenhouse and open field vegetable work in Nigeria.
Sizing a kit for your plot
To size a kit we need the plot length and width, your bed or row spacing, and the crop. From that we calculate total tape metres, number of runs, and therefore how many joiners, end caps and connectors you need.
For greenhouse growers the same calculation applies per bay, so a 30m by 8m house is quick to quote precisely.

Do I really need a filter on a drip system?
Yes. Sediment in borehole, well or surface water blocks emitters, and blocked emitters cannot be cleaned back to full flow. A filter is far cheaper than replacing tape.
