Insect netting is the cheapest pest control a greenhouse will ever buy. It works before the pest arrives, it does not need reapplication, and it cuts spray cost for the life of the net. The only real decision is mesh count.
40 mesh vs 50 mesh
50 mesh has smaller openings and excludes smaller insects, including whitefly and thrips that carry virus into tomato and pepper. The trade-off is reduced airflow, which matters in hot, still locations.
40 mesh breathes more freely and suits growers whose main pressure is larger insects, or houses with strong cross ventilation and taller side walls.
If virus-carrying pests are your problem, choose 50 mesh and design for ventilation. If heat build-up is your problem, 40 mesh with good side ventilation is often the better whole-system answer.
Airflow, temperature and net area
Netting reduces the effective opening of every vent, so a screened house needs more vent area than an open one to move the same air. Increasing side wall height and vent length compensates without dropping mesh count.
Fixing insect net so it lasts
- Fix with interlocking profiles and wringles rather than nails or staples, which tear the net at every point of stress.
- Leave the net slightly slack. A drum-tight net rips at the corners on the first strong wind.
- Screen every opening including doors and roof vents. One unscreened vent defeats the whole install.
- Inspect seams and repair small tears immediately, before they run.
Quality markers to check before buying
Look for UV-stabilised monofilament yarn, consistent mesh count across the roll, and clean, straight selvedge edges. Cheap netting degrades in sunlight and goes brittle within a season, which is exactly when you notice you saved nothing.
