Black or silver-black?
Black film blocks light so weeds under the bed cannot establish, and it holds soil moisture. It is the standard choice for most vegetable beds.
Silver-black film has a reflective silver top and black underside. The silver surface reflects light upward, which reduces bed temperature and disturbs aphids and whitefly that navigate by light. It costs more, and it earns that back in hot conditions and on crops under sucking-pest pressure.
Thickness and width
- Thicker film survives a full season, plus handling and walking traffic, without splitting at planting holes.
- Match width to your bed width plus enough on each side to bury the edges firmly.
- Buying the correct width is cheaper than trimming a wider roll, so measure beds before ordering.
Laying mulching film so it works
- Prepare and moisten the bed first. Film locks in whatever moisture level you start with.
- Lay drip tape under the film before covering, not after.
- Bury both edges in soil along the full length. Wind lifts any loose edge and tears the sheet.
- Cut planting holes only as wide as the seedling needs, so you keep light off the soil.
